Try and vary your methods as you will, your tastes, your habits, your attitude of mind, and your soul is revealed by your actions. How to Start Your Mystery Novel

Try to surprise the reader at the end, but always play fair. Experience has proved her right. Make them feel foolish for following a false lead.

Focus is on the main character, rather than the crime. Start with a fictional character. Sometimes it starts a "ticking clock. This will help you draw your reader and sleuth in the wrong direction so you can surprise them in the end. You can also do the opposite: Lay in just enough character and setting description to orient the reader. Do they interview and ask lots of questions? Do the hinges squeak or the floors creak? Be excited to move toward your conclusion. Enjoy hanging out with your characters, especially your main one.

Cozies, for instance, require a great deal of setting and character description, maintaining a slow pace while keeping it interesting.
